Here's a link to another view of Gordon from the most excellent site, 14 to 42, circa 1988. Dig the mad clown.

Another shot from the other window, 1988, also from 14 to 42.

Gordon Novelty Co.: Doomed

New York's last "novelty" shop, Gordon Novelty C). (931-933 Broadway between 21st & 22nd Sts.)will soon be demolished. The City needs another nail salon, bank, drug store, etc. Say goodbye to "party hats, canes, masks, grab bags, noisemakers, dice, joke items, novelty hats, carnival items, bingo supplies, lanterns, Halloween items" and "premium goods," all under one roof.

Coney Island's Astroland

Gone but not forgotten, Astroland was one of the iconic businesses (and theme parks) on Coney's boardwalk. With only a few of its historic structures remaining, Coney Island hangs in the balance. Most likely Thor Equities gutting will continue as the nation's first adventure park (1876) is rebuilt to resemble Anywhere USA, with no respect to its heritage as the location of the first Harpo Marx performance, Nathan's Hot Dogs, weird Vaudeville stage shows and much American history.

Cedar Walton

As part of my day job, I sometimes interview musicians. Cedar Walton is one of the world's great jazz pianists, photographed at the Village Vanguard, the most historic jazz club in America.

Greenpoint Door

An old industrial port across from Manhattan, Greenpoint now mostly homes the well to do and hipsters. The neighborhood is slowly changing, old stores being converted into bars, clubs. A few relics remain, here and there.

Chelsea Florist

Chelsea's flower district, though rapidly dissapearing like most of the city's old manual labor businesses, is still home to old joints like this. No doubt a holdover from the 50s or 60s when the term "Novelties" was used to describe what? Party flowers? Exploding cigars? Fart cushions?

Hell's Kitchen Westies

Rumor has it that back in the day the notorious Irish mobsters the Westies chopped and diced more than one body in the back room of Rudy's Bar & Grill. If only the pig could talk.
